What genre are you?

Whenever I tell someone I want to write, I am always asked ‘what genre are you?’  I still can’t answer that question.

At school there were only 5 genres and you had to stick to one.  Now there are many and you can mix and match.  For example Sherlock Holmes was simply a mystery.  Now it comes under crime/mystery/historical/thriller and possibly more.

If what I read influences my choice, then I am likely to write science fiction/thriller/historical/comedy/horror/romance.  I can’t wait to see where the library will put it.

When someone does ask me, I currently give them a blank stare and say ‘um’ a lot.  I may make up a ‘Mintish’ genre purely for use in the Bristol area.  If Banksy can do it, why can’t I?
